ATTENTION: WinkWorld Readers RE: BOUNCE-BACKS - Check your "Junk" settings. It is normal for school districts to have internet filters which block unknown messages. In addition, teachers often give us only their .edu email. Because of this, we receive bounce-backs from many teachers, who then wonder why they are not receiving this newsletter. I try to find/contact each person who has a bounce-back, but I have limited success. Please contact news@joanwink.com if you would like to supply a 2nd email address. |
WinkWorld March 2004
During Wyatt's first week of home schooling, I noticed several things. I saw my first evidence of inventive spelling when he wrote to me and said they were going shopping to buy "jrnles, foldr holdrs, bultin bard, pensls, pens." In too many classrooms, these first attempts at writing are marked wrong. Actually, he wrote me several email posts - all without any help from Dawn. Second, he helped organize some of his mom's books into genre. Later, he reported his findings to me: "Education has 33 books. PpD [post partum depression] has 2, and home school have 15. We will send a pitcher of the shelves." Third, Wyatt began copying word-by-word, paragraph-by-paragraph with untold glee one of his Harry Potter books. Fourth, I asked him to draw a pie graph of the books. He wrote back, "Grammie, I have no idea what a pie graph is." Of course, his sentence alone thrilled me. I wrote back and told him to think about how we divide the apple pies that he and his mom make. Later I told him to imagine 80 red books, 10 yellow books, 5 green books, and 5 blue books. Please enjoy his first pie graph.
