In addition, I did go see two wonderful concerts: Barry Manilow and Cher: Two of my age-mates, who have also failed retirement.
Monique Preciado: Congratulations for the Distinguished Schools Award! Once again this past semester I had the joy of teaching and learning with the best students and teachers in the whole wide world! I do not understand why I am so lucky every semester, but it continues to happen. One of my 50 students, a young classroom teacher, was a part of the California Distinguished School Award 2010 for Alice Stroud Elementary School of Empire Union School District. In true fashion, she talked about how she can accept this award only as a representative of so many of her colleagues, who also deserve the award.
Other interesting tidbits about Monique:
she is a mom and wife;
she is the only person I know, who taught 62 fifth graders in one class one year;
she also received the Stanislaus County Office of Education Bell Award in 2009;
she was pink-slipped last month for budgetary reasons. She is presently job-hunting. Stay tuned.
I encourage you to treat yourself to the hottest ideas in teaching and learning and subscribe to this grassroots journal. The best. For example, this month, Linda Darling-Hammond summaries why students in Finland schools do better academically than students in the US. Turns out that Finland does the exact opposite from the US. Finland supports deep learning; the federal mandates of the US enforce a policy of a mile wide and an inch deep. Finland focuses on true equity for all. And, yes, even the immigrant children from Afghanistan, Bosnia, India, Iran, Iraq, Serbia, Somalia, Turkey, Thailand, and Vietnam; their achievement is climbing also.
Also, in this edition of Rethinking Schools, Bob Peterson has a fabulous proposal: a librarian in every school.
Larry Ferlazzo continues to be extremely generous in his sharing of ideas and materials with teachers and learners. Thank you, Larry!

Notes from the Real World Grandkids have been the highlight of the last few weeks. I was able to spend a week near Boise Idaho for a week of vacation bible school for the beautiful boys of Boise, and 160 of their friends.
Attack of the Swallows Every summer our house is attacked by swallows, who want to build their mud homes near the eaves. As these are very dirty birds and make a mess on windows and walls, we have tried everything: knocking down their homes; spraying Pam so their homes do not adhere to our home; placing anything reflective (tinfoil or baggies full of water) near their homes; placing mothballs in their nests; and, we even bought one of those fake owls, which seemed to work for about 30 minutes. Rubber snakes are next.
Attack of the Curlew When I go for my morning walk, I know I am near the baby curlews on the prairies, as all of the mamas and papas are flying around my head. A true cacophony….and, yes, that is the first time I ever really had need for that word.
