Joan Wink, Ph. D., is a professor emerita of education at California State University, Stanislaus (CSUS) in the College of Education. Throughout her career, she has focused on languages, literacy, and learning in pluralistic contexts. She has forty years of experience in various educational settings: pre-K, middle and high school, higher education, and international/global education. She continues teaching part-time for CSUS and for The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in their Global Education program. In addition, she speaks nationally as she advocates for teachers, students, families, and libraries. Dr. Wink continues her active involvement with NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English), IRA (International Reading Association), PKP (The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages),and CVDLC (Central Valley Dual Language Consortium). She is the author of Critical Pedagogy: Notes from the Real World (1997; 2000, 2005, 2011), and co-author of A Vision of Vygotsky (2002) with Le Putney of UNLV; this book is now available also as an eBook. She and her daughter, Dawn, co-authored Teaching Passionately: What's Love Got To Do With It? (2004); all of her books are published by Pearson Education. Joan is presently working on a foundations of education book and a second book on the advantages of being bilingual. Joan completed her Ph. D. at Texas A&M (1991) in Curriculum and Instruction. She has two master's degrees from the University of Arizona, one in Spanish (1982) and another in Bilingual Education (1985). Her undergraduate degree came from Yankton College (1966) in South Dakota. Dr. Wink has taught in Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Arizona, and South Dakota. During her experiences in public education, she was a director of Title VII grants, and she has taught Spanish, English, Language Arts, Reading in middle school and high school. She has directed a pre-K, K, 1 Spanish dual language immersion program, and was the Bilingual Coordinator for ESL, bilingual, and migrant education programs. Presently, Joan divides her time between two worlds-teaching part-time, speaking and consulting nationally, and writing on the family ranch in South Dakota.
