Dear WinkWorld Readers:
A smile for your day.
With Literacy and Justice for All: Rethinking the Social in Language and Education by Carole Edelsky was first published in 1991 by Falmer Press. The book had a profound impact on my professional development, and I used it in various classes which I taught during my career, and we always referred to it as the BEST.BOOK.TITLE.EVER.
In the last few years, this title has morphed into a slogan, With Literacy and Justice for All. It has even begun to appear on t-shirts, without a citation. As Dawn, my daughter would say, “Mom was incensed.”
In the photo below, please note that Dawn’s t-shirt does not have a citation.
However, what are those extra little black lines on my t-shirt?
A-ha, my t-shirt does have the correct citation.
Thank you to my friend, Annie, who came over to write the citation on the t-shirt for me.
And, a special THANK YOU to the author of the book and my friend, Dr. Carole Edelsky.
I try to keep passing on my professional books, but I did find a few examples of Carole’s books lying around here.
We had fun with these t-shirts last week when we were at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) for the Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting ceremony of the Language and Literacy Studio on June 22, 2026. Chancellor/President Dr. James Johnston unveiled a transformative new space dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of reading and advancing language skills in both English and Spanish.
Dawn was hired there in January 2026 to lead in the implementation of this place and program for little readers and writers. As parents, it was thrilling for us to be there with her. Dawn has a wonderful team of professors, teachers, students, and families who are all creating magic every day with books, stories, giggles, and hugs. Her blog, Dawn Wink: Dewdrops is coming soon and will be filled with joy, I am sure.
Some of you had trouble with the Comment function of WinkWorld, the last 2 issues. I believe we have that fixed. Sorry.
