Goodreads and More Books

October 31, 2026

Dear WinkWorld Readers,

In the last WinkWorld, I shared a little about Parkinson’s and Rogue-in-motion.  In this edition of WinkWorld, I will share a little about Goodreads.

What is Goodreads?  Goodreads is “a social book catalog website” according to AI.  To me, it is a huge online informal book club, where anyone can go and do what we love: Talk about books with others who love books.  Years ago, I thought seriously about sharing the books I read on Goodreads. I decided not to do so, as I preferred to share with you on WinkWorld one or two times per year.  However, I always felt like I ‘should’ also read on Goodreads, as I know it is a great place to learn.

Out of the blue and to my great surprise, I was contacted by Goodreads recently, as one of their communities, The Open Book Reading Circle, was reading my book, and they asked if I would take part in their Meet the Author online discussion.  The group was a lively group of avid readers, who are led by a very competent and accomplished moderator, who loves literacy the way I do.  We all spent several days engaged in great dialogue about the value of storytelling.

The Power of Story by Joan Wink

Some of you will remember that this book was originally (2017) published by Libraries Unlimited.

Dark Reckoning by J.E. Taylor

This is book number one in the Steve Williams series. It appears to me that the Open Book community had chosen this book previously. I read it, and if you ever wanted to read a book exactly opposite from anything I would write, this one is for you.

Ten Kids, Two Lovebirds, and a Singing Mermaid by Cathy Lamb

I knew nothing about J.E. Taylor, author of Dark Reckoning, and I know nothing about Cathy Lamb, author of Ten Kids, Two Lovebirds, and a Singing Mermaid, but it is a safe guess that this next book will be the opposite of the last one.

Partita by Barbara Kingsolver

When finished with Ten Kids, I am returning to what I was reading before Goodreads connected with me about two weeks ago.

I am very impressed with the Goodreads Open Book Reading Circle, and I plan to remain in this community of readers. They pride themselves on not being genre-specific, and I can see how they have already expanded my boundaries.

I continue to visit schools and read books to the kids. These are the books we read in the last couple of weeks.

These are the books I am going to read to the children next.

And thanks to my dear friend Annie for helping me get this WinkWorld out to you.
