Dear WinkWorld Readers,
As the incomparable Amanda Gorman writes in her poem, “Memorial” (2021, “Call Us What We Carry,”):
When we tell a story
We are living
Memory….
That would explain why so much great art arises from trauma, nostalgia, or testimony (p.74).
When read that, I immediately called Dawn, our daughter, who was having a particularly challenging day. I told her to go write, and write she did!
Hope you enjoy Dawn’s writing as much as I do. I believe that Dawn captures how such beautiful writing can come from pain.
I have written about some of my experiences which Dawn references. See below.

Joan, I had the SAME experience. I didn’t have funds to get the regalia (later, a former teacher/good friend read me the riot act, wished she had known and would have gifted it to me), but later, as I worked with HS kids and we were asked to wear college t-shirts and such, I bought it and brought my diploma(s) and THAT to college awareness day. And I wore it to my students’ HS graduations. Now I have no use for it, but still love it and the reasons I got it and wore it. P.S. Loved Dawn’s piece, too.

Thanks for sharing, Debra! We were together a lot during these years and never shared these stories with each other. Thanks for your comments on Dawn’s writing. I loved her piece, too.
